What some independent guides are saying:

Staying at Villa le Barone is very much like being the guest in a private, elegant home set in the gorgeous Tuscan hills in front of the San Leolino Abbey. The lounges are especially inviting, beautifully furnished with charming, family antiques. In addition, there is a lovely swimming pool, romantically set on a terrace looking over the vineyards and rose garden. Wonderful little hideaways are found secluded in the park-like setting where guests can sit and soak in the beauty of the surroundings hills. Karen Brown's Italy, Exceptional Places to Stay & Itineraries

The sitting room has an irresistible comfort, with a log fire for the chilly nights and vast coffee-table books to whet your appetite for Italy. The airy dining room - once the wine cellar - is a fitting setting for leisurely Tuscan dinners and local wines. The gardens are no less appealing, full of roses, olives trees and lavender; you have tennis for the active, a parasoled terrace for the idle and a pool that is far too seductive for anyone intent upon a cultural holiday. That's said, do visit the exquisite church of San Leolino, a step away. Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay

In an old country property, a patrician Villa belonging to the Della Robbia between olive groves and vineyards, in the heart of Chianti. Distinction and class. Red Michelin Guide,

This 16th century family house used to belong to the Della Robia family, famous for their ceramics. Fresh flowers brighten the sitting rooms and antiques furnish the bedrooms. DK eyewitness travel guides, Florence and Tuscany

Formerly the home of the Viviani della Robbia Family, this 16th century Villa retains many aspects of a private home. The honor bar allows you either to enjoy an aperitivo in the tile barroom, or on the terrace while admiring the view. And there are views here in abundance, from the pool to the rose garden, to the back of the Villa. Guest rooms have tile floors, white walls and timber ceilings. Fodor's, Italy

Nothing really gives the impression to be in a hotel; neither the lounge with its reading corner and its fire place, nor the fresh and attractive bed rooms with their coloured printed fabrics. And not even the swimming pool, where lawns and shades are fitted out to protect you from hot season of the Florentine summer. As for the tennis, it is necessary to go at least there for the sight, which extends over olive trees and vineyards of Chianti Classico. A little aside, on the top of the village,  follow indication panels (for Villa le Barone). Hardly arrived, one falls under the charm. The manor house built around a tower of the middle ages, dominates gardens which are sloping down gently  to the swimming pool. Inside, the original furniture, having belonged to the marchioness Della Robbia, was kept by her daughter who transformed the family residence into a charm hotel in 1976.  Voyager Pratique, Michelin, Toscane Ombrie

Villa Le Barone best hotel in The Good Hotel GuideMy attack in last month's letter on background music drew a mixed response from hoteliers. Clearly not everyone shares my prejudice that it is a modern day curse. Countess Jacqueline Aloisi de Larderel, the owner of my favourite Italian hotel (Villa le Barone in Tuscany) points out: ‘I totally agree with you that it is better to hear bird song ! But when you have two couples, not speaking to one another because they are overwhelmed by the silence of a large dining room, what do you suggest? Good Hotel Guide
