A historical heritage

The Villa was built on a defence tower at the time of the war between Florence and Siena. During the Renaissance period, the tower was converted into a Villa with its own agricultural estate; it was the summer retreat of the famous Florentine Della Robbia family. After the first World War, Marchesa Maria Bianca Viviani Della Robbia managed Villa le Barone as a wine and olive oil estate.

Maria Bianca, a writer (in particular, she wrote “A Farm in Chianti”) was the granddaughter of François de Larderel, a French 18th century industrialist, who discovered and developed the use of geothermal vapours in Tuscany. Her daughter, Duchess Franca Visconti, turned the Villa into a hotel in 1977.
