Traditional Horse Race “Palio”:

The famous traditional horse race, “Palio” is held twice each year, on July 2nd and August 16th.

This renowned Italian festival stages an exciting horse race in which jockeys from the 17 local “contrade” (city wards) ride bareback (i.e., without a saddle) in the beautiful setting of Siena's Piazza del Campo. The prize goes to the horse that, with or without its jockey, completes three laps first, winning the coveted Drappellone-a fine silk drape created by a different artist each year. The event, which dates back to 1633, represents more to the Sienese than just a competition: it is a beloved tradition that unites the communities of each contrada in a lively spirit of rivalry and friendship, working assiduously throughout the year to orchestrate the event.

Wine Festival

Early September, many “Black Rooster” producers, the emblem of the Chianti Classico DOCG denomination, showcase their wines in the main market square.

Every winery has their own booth where they can present and offer tastings of their wines and other local products, such as olive oil. Visitors can taste the wines by the glass at the specific organizers’ stand in the center of the square. There are also many side events organized during the Expo days, such as guided wine tastings, art exhibitions, and concerts. The event is open to the general public.

Panzano in Chianti, “Vino Al Vino”: this local wine festival takes place on the main square in Panzano, on the third week of September. Panzano in Chianti was among the first wine-growing districts to choose the certified and controlled organic farming method, becoming a pioneer in the sector. Authenticity is the central value – focusing on the sensation and pleasure of a good glass of wine, perhaps while looking at a vineyard at sunset in Panzano in Chianti. It is precisely this authenticity that the winemakers of Panzano invite visitors to experience in person during the days of Vino al Vino, a sensorial experience that goes beyond simple tasting.
